Eucalyptus globulus

 

 

Eucalyptus draws its name from two Greek words the 'eu' and 'kalypto' meaning 'well' and 'covered'. Eucalyptus oil which is extracted primarily from Eucalyptus globulus belongs to the Myrtaceae family. The pale yellow essential oil so obtained is achieved through a process of steam distillation from the green twigs and leaves of the tree.

Growing to a height of around 100mts, It is one of the tallest trees in the world and has smooth pale bark, blue green leaves and creamy white flowers. Eucalyptus oil has a sharp, clear and a distinguishing smell.

Indigenous to Australia, the tree has been cultivated in Spain, Russia, Brazil, and U.S.A. Though non toxic and non irritant externally, the oil has proved to be fatal on being ingested or used internally.
